What the work has involved
Preparing a software business for external product sales
The initial request was to formalise rights in employee-created software. The company was providing development services within a holding group and wanted to sell its products externally. I explained why it needed a wider model connecting IP, personal data, confidentiality and commercialisation. Management agreed to build it in stages.
I implemented the employee-created IP process with HR and project and product managers. The wider system is still being developed and put into use. Much of my work now is with stakeholders: refining the sequence of actions and dealing with practical barriers. I also investigated software pricing and prepared materials to support commercial decisions.
Taking a clinic from preparation to opening
I broke the launch into tasks and dependencies, handled premises approvals and prepared the clinic for licensing. I checked staff credentials, arranged training and worked through equipment options with the chief physician before purchasing. I was the management's sole representative at the pre-licensing inspection.
The clinic obtained its licence and opened with eight staff. After opening, I arranged employment, supplier and support-service contracts. The full launch, including renovation and premises approvals, took approximately 2-2.5 years.
Getting people, equipment and licensing ready
For the first industrial-safety assessment business, I organised specialist training and examinations, equipment readiness and the licence application. I submitted the documents personally and supported the company through its inspection. The first licence was obtained on the initial submission, in time for the planned work.
I later used my knowledge of the process and the training providers and equipment suppliers I had found to obtain the same licence for three further companies.
Keeping contracts moving through disruption
I provided ongoing legal and operational support to an industrial contracting group. At one stage I handled day-to-day legal matters for six companies, including tender participation, contract performance and negotiations.
During the pandemic, the work included staff access permits, logistics disruption and subcontractor delays. I negotiated with subcontractors and the client organisation, including changes to deadlines when work was delayed.

Physics, law and practice
Physics
My first degree was in physics, specialising in quantum electronics. It gave me a habit of looking at how a system works and checking the explanation against evidence.
Law
Legal work taught me to examine responsibility, rights and consequences, and to see what happens when an agreement meets everyday operations.
Practice
Business launches and ongoing client work required me to organise tasks, work with specialists and deal with problems that did not belong to one function.
In my current technology work, I use that experience to connect business requirements with the processes and decisions needed to act on them.
